When it Rains...Islanders 3, Senators 1

As Jeremy Milks suggested over at Black Aces, the Senators would have probably found it tough to want to get up for this game against the Isles after the way they psyched themselves out against Detroit last night. If there are any pluses I can glean from this loss, it's that with Martin Gerber losing yet another start, I suppose this can only mean that we temporarily have the goaltending situation sorted out.
On the other hand, there are a million minuses to take from this. For one, I am trying really hard to hold off from beating the living daylights out of the panic button now that Jason Spezza has also suffered an injury. Spezza was flattened in the first period by an open-ice hit courtesy of Freddy Meyer, he got up and went to the bench and managed to speak to the trainer. He was out for his next shift but didn't see the ice at all after the first intermission.
A team spokesman said Spezza was held out for "precautionary measures," though there was no indication of the nature of his injury.
Okay so, [deep breaths] "precautionary measures" [deep breaths] doesn't necessarily mean anything right? Right?
The four-game winning streak is over but this is yet another troubling sign of the Senators not really showing up for a lowlier opponent. I can understand them being a little bit weary after a big game just the night before, but given that there is still half a season left, a lot can change and they ought to be keen to remember that a lot can change in that time. Here's hoping that they learn from this as they meet their Achilles Heel, the Capitals on Tuesday.
Labels: home loss, injuries, jason spezza, martin gerber, New York Islanders, this can't be happening

oh...my...dude... is this gonna kill my prediction of the Sens going all the way??? ARGH!!!
Sherry, I do not think Gerber played all that bad. The team as a whole didn't play well. I did not see the 3rd goal, but the 1st and the 2nd goal he really had no chances.
Was it just me or was Alfie a man possessed out there?
Was at this one too (saw a lot of hockey this weekend between the Sens and the 67s!). Big difference. Even the fans were suffering post-Wings sag - no jump from them and not so much from the team. Gerber actually played really well (except for the Comrie goal). But it was all Swedish and no finish - Ottawa had a number of chances that they just couldn't bury.
ckim, there's still time! At least, I think there is. The good news is Spezza will be likely to play on Tuesday. Heater however, is out at least 6 weeks.
PaV, I don't think Gerber played terribly, but given the numbers I think it's only fair that Emery be the go-to guy right now. It would cause a lot unrest in the room if you ignored Emery's 6-1-1 performance while Gerber has lost his last 3 starts.
Blitzen, they really did look snake bitten. I suppose that's expected of the crowd though, coming off of such a high from the Wings and the lack of drama facing the Islanders since Yashin's not there anymore.
Congrats, my dear - I think you are officially the first (and probably the last) person to ever refer to the Caps as someone's Achilles' heel ;)
I wouldn't worry too much. I think the Caps may be done with their Sens-domination. I'm just sad I won't get to see Heater - when you guys aren't playing us you know I love the Sens and he's always fun.
Battle of the backups tomorrow, by the way...isn't it thrilling?
CC, guess i wasn't wrong. Hope this morale boost doesn't mean you'll squeak into 8th in the East. I'd hate to think of what would happen should we meet you guys in the playoffs.
