Today is somewhat of a momentous day for us at Scarlett Ice as this morning was my convocation ceremony after 4..."memorable" years at McMaster University. My friend who went to Queen's had her ceremony a couple of days ago and their guest speaker was none other than hockey legend Jean Beliveau. We didn't have a hockey player speak at our ceremony but I'm still glad I went after initially wanting to opt out, plus my parents got a kick out of it. Unfortunately, my dad was sitting rather far in the back and totally filmed somebody else getting their diploma conferred to them by the chancellor but whatever. We'll always have the memories.
- The NHLPA and various goalie equipment manufacturers met today to do tests to see if there ought to be a reduction in the size of goalie equipment.
- The Chicago Wolves are this year's Calder Cup Champions. Check out my HLOG sister Amy's blog for full details of the win!
- Happy Trails, Trevor! As after 19 seasons in the NHL, Trevor Linden has announced his retirement from the game. As valuable as his on-ice game was, his off-ice contributions were also very important to the NHL. He's a first-class guy and he will be missed. One can only hope that he continue to be involved in the league somehow after perhaps taking a well deserved break.
Senators Coaching News
The news that the Senators have signed current Kitchener Ranger head coach Peter DeBoer as their new bench boss is premature. News came out earlier that DeBoer was meeting with Senators owner Eugene Melnyk and while that is indeed true, Bryan Murray says that is simply part a continuation of the interview process. So the waiting continues. The front-runner at one point, at least according to some sources was Bob Hartley formerly of the Atlanta Thrashers but the list has allegedly been shortened to be between DeBoer and Craig Hartsburg.
DeBoer's record with the Kitchener Rangers is certainly impressive, but it needs to be noted that he doesn't have any experience coaching at the NHL level and I'm not sure that would be a good fit with this crop of guys. They're exceptionally talented, but are also exceptionally lazy so what they need is somebody who can get under their skin and give them an extra kick in the ass or two.
Hartsburg's reputation in junior and on the world stage is impressive, having been behind the bench for the last two Team Canada gold medal wins at the World Juniors. He does have head coaching experience at the NHL level having coached the Chicago Blackhawks and the Anaheim Ducks although I'm not too familiar with his record with either one. Either way, major changes should be in store for this team.

CONGRATULATIONS SHERRY!
But...um...if I may be so bold, that's the strangest ceremonial gown I've ever seen.
JEAN BELIVEAU?? *dies* He's basically the coolest dude ever. At my graduation, the superintendent spoke, I don't know who will speak for college. It's a small school, who knows?
Thanks SLC! And the Michelin pads would have helped with our graduation robes. My ceremonial hood was made for somebody with much more broad shoulders than I and the bloody thing kept on slipping off.
Kirsten, that's what I heard! My friend isn't even into hockey and she said he was so interesting.
I didn't know who was going to speak at our ceremony either but I assume it's one of those people who are getting honourary degrees from your school.
I'm jealous that they got Beliveau this year. My guy wasn't particularly memorable...the only thing I remember is that he was male.
I know for me, I did convocation more for my parents than for me. I know throughout the ceremony I really just wished I had brought a book. I'm hopeful that doing fall convocation for my MA will mean less people.
