Senators Extend Qualifying Offers

The Ottawa Sun has a list of RFAs that have been extended qualifying offers from the Senators. The list includes Andrej Meszaros, Antoine Vermette, Josh Hennessy and goalie Jeff Glass. The Sun article also talks about Luke Richardson's desire to play another year. Richardson is 39-years-old and does add some much needed toughness to the team, however Bryan Murray is playing the wait and see approach and probably won't give Richardson an answer until he can see what's out there to pick up on the free agent market. In my mind, Meszaros will be resigned and possibly used as trade bait. The Senators blue-line still has a few holes to plug, Brian Lee has a very good chance of making the team next year after a strong debut this past season and with Wade Redden seeking greener pastures elsewhere. The Senators also have Lawrence Nycholat under contract for a one-way deal that calls for him to earn $600,000.
The article also talks about Mike Commodore and the possibility of him resigning with the Senators. It looks like Murray is saying that it's coming down to dollars right now and there's no word yet on whether or not they've made any in-roads with resigning Cory Stillman.
I'm ready for the frenzy to start already. As long as the Senators don't get stupid and decide to blow their brains out on Brian Campbell or Marian Hossa that is. Oh, and yes the Senators are in fact aware that Gary Roberts will be available on July 1st and the word is that he's interested in signing with either the Senators or the Leafs. Are there enough paper bags to go around to prevent all of the fans from hyper-ventilating? I'm not saying Roberts did nothing for the Penguins, yes they made it to the finals (the Senators made it to the finals without him, and Roberts did sit out in several of the Penguins games), but I think we need reminding that the Penguins didn't win anything with Roberts either and he is getting up there in age. Just something to keep in mind when deciding what number to put on his paycheque.

All the qualifying offers seem like smart moves. Let's just home that Murray doesn't get silly and trade Meszaros. Yes, Meszaros took a step backwards last year but he is still a young up and coming talent and should be a part of the Sens blueline for years to come.
I've been very worried to see what direction the Sens head in, knowing that the core of the team that made them so successful over the last decade is aging. Are we going to let some young kids prove themselves or are we going to overpay for free agents and hope for the best. This team needs to make sure it remains successful for the next decade and needs to let their young talent play.
The only place a splash would be welcome is in the spot between the pipes. I still don't agree with giving up Emery for nothing. If you can get a 5th rounder for McGrattan, we should have been able to get something for Emery.
Wait-since Jeff Glass is getting called up from the B-Sens, does that mean that David Leggio will be the starting goalie for the B-Sens?
ya %*&^ Roberts!
TheHux, I think the main difference between McGrattan and Emery was the size of their salary. With Gratts' salary, I can imagine a team willing to take him on but not so much with Emery's salary and the other issues surrounding him.
I hope Meszaros can get out of his slump because my patience is wearing thin with him.
Dani, That depends. If Jeff Glass gets called up, most likely Brian Elliott will stay in Binghamton and be the starter.
Anonymous, well put :P
Did you guys watch the finals when the pens tied i think game 5 really late and won it in overtime, nd then Don Cherry was all, "Look at Roberts on the bench leading the pack!" and then they showed a clip of roberts yelling something at the bench before they scored the tying goal?
I backed it up and watched the replay in slow mo and read Roberts' lips. What he said, exactly, was, "Come on boys. 6 on 5."
I hate Don Cherry and I hate Gary Roberts. I wish them both ill and that neither ever becomes affiliated with my beloved sens.
