Rangers: Lockout? What Lockout?

You've all heard by now that the New York Rangers have signed Wade Redden to a six-year, $39 million deal. That averages out to be around $6.5 million a year, which is what he was making with the Senators on his last deal. Ideally, I would have liked him to go out West so we wouldn't cross paths as often, and this will only further my fear that Redden experiences some sort of career renaissance that makes him an expert at Senators-slaying. While I should know in this day and age those figures shouldn't surprise me, I'm still astounded that not only Redden, with his mediocrity lately has managed to command that salary, but the Rangers yet again, have chosen to blow their brains out on the prettiest pony available at the auction (or some other similar metaphor). Seriously, where are they getting all of this money from? Aren't they concerned that their deep pockets won't be around much longer if Bettman's constant drum banging that they be booted out actually happens? What about the future of the team? Aren't they concerned about Henrik Lundqvist's inevitable salary increase?

In any case, I do wish Redden well in his new role for the Forces of Evil (But Not as Evil as the Leafs)TM. The Ottawa media might not have been the easiest to deal with but I can't imagine New York, largest media market in America is going to be a cake-walk either. This also does confirm my suspicion that no matter how much they might insist on it, it is indeed at the end of the day, all about the money.

As far as I can tell the New York media doesn't really much care about hockey. And those media members who do care about hockey are mostly crazy (e.g. Stan, who probably thinks Redden is a great Norris candidate now that he's signed with the Rangers). So I suppose Redden's insane contract fits right in. And he should be glad he's not a baseball player.

I was really surprised Redden didn't sign in the West. I thought he'd probably end up in San Jose or something. The Rangers usually sign people who are a bit closer to retirement.

I'm, like you, really surprised he was able to get so much money on such a long-term deal. There were some GMs out there making really questionable decisions yesterday. So really, yeah, I don't know why I'm surprised.

At least Murray didn't go nuts.

Meg, I absolutely cannot wait for Stan to start beating Redden's Norris Drum and to have it blow up spectacularly in his face.

And it's true. Lucky for him he's got all the baseball players to deflect all the attention.

Meaghan, that's true as I heard that if San Jose lost out on resigning Brian Campbell that they would take a hard run at Redden. Him signing with the Rangers just prove that I underestimated the evil he was capable of :P

And I'm glad Murray didn't go nuts either, but I hope he does something soon. I'm absolutely gutted we lost out on resigning Stillman and Commodore. It means we lost Corvo (well, not that big of a deal really) and Eaves for nothing.
