100 Things - Part 1 of Possibly Many

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm just about ready for hockey to start. I've been trying to fill in my sports void by watching my fair share of Jays games, but it's simply just not the same. The Battle of Alberta is trying to help us with our boredom by introducing their version of the Summer Games and some of my other bloggers have taken up to doing these 100 things about themselves lists, which seems kind of fun so I guess that's what I'll be doing here. I was a little tentative at first since I wanted to keep the non-hockey related stuff away from the blog, but heck, it's the off-season and we all need some reading material.
1) I was born in Taipei, Taiwan but moved to Canada when I was 5. My first language is Mandarin but now my English is waaaaayyyy better than my Mandarin.
2) I play 3 instruments with some semblance of skill. I'm classically trained in piano (been playing since I was 4) and flute (started when I was 11) and I started playing guitar when I was 15.
3) I went to a performing and visual arts high school (kind of like in "Fame" except we don't spontaneously burst into musical numbers. I would have liked it so much more if we did) for flute. Yes, I was a total band nerd. There, I also learned how to play clarinet and tenor saxophone, although pretty terribly mind you.
4) I have a typing speed of over 120 wpm. I first started typing on old fashioned typewriters because I used to and still do write stories for fun. Which leads us to...
5) I write stories for fun. Right now, I have two completed scripts and a whole load of unfinished novels. When I was little, I used to be not shy about sharing them with other people and making other people read it but as I got older I got really shy about it because I don't think I could take the criticism all that well. I guess when one gets older, there comes the expectation that your writing doesn't altogether suck and I'm sort of convinced my writing sort of sucks.

6) I'm really quite shy in person. I'm not the type that feels comfortable at all going up to strangers and talking to them or doing networking of any kind. If I don't talk to you, know that I'm not being mean or ignoring you on purpose...I'm just really shy.
7) That being said, I'm a very talkative and friendly drunk. If you want me to loosen up, I suggest making sure I'm drinking something alcoholic.
8) I went through this phase when I was in middle school where I swore I would NEVER get married. I was convinced that marriage was simply a bourgeois, patriarchal institution designed to keep women down and that if I did end up getting married, I'd have to give up my career to raise the kids while my husband could do whatever he wanted. I don't know why it never occurred to me that that problem is easily avoided by not marrying an ass-hole, but hey, you're allowed to be dumb when you're a kid.
9) Speaking of dumb things I did as a kid, I went through the following phases: punk phase, emo/goth phase and faux-gangsta' phase. No, there aren't any pictures.
10) I am an absolute audiophile. I wear headphones wherever I go and I absolutely need to have music playing at all times.
11) This isn't news to anybody at all, but my most favourite band in the world is Muse.
12) I'm really digging Santogold's music right now.
13) When I was young, I really wanted to be a dancer. I know every little girl has dreams of being a ballerina, but I took jazz and really wanted to do that kind of stuff. Unfortunately, my dancing career lasted all of a year because my mom pulled me out of my classes.
14) I'm a beer snob. I really like dark beer but asides from that these are the only brands I like: Rickard's Red, Steamwhistle and Sleeman's. I'll drink Heineken and Corona if there's nothing else available.
15) I'm really into photography. I don't have all that impressive skills or particularly hardcore equipment, but I really love it. I have a camera with me at all times.
16) I have an inexplicably huge crush on Roy Halladay.

17) I am awesome at the following video games: Bust-A-Move, Guitar Hero/Rock Band, MarioKart, Super Mario 2 (the SNES version) and The Legend of Zelda (also SNES).
18)Because I'm a music nut, I started writing my own songs when I was 11. Mind you, it was really really crappy, but I've been writing since then and I'm sad to say...my songs are still very, very crappy.
19) I've been singing in choirs in church and school for as long as I could remember. When I was in 8th grade, I joined a community choir and we performed at a whole bunch of places around the GTA. We even got to go on a 9-day tour of Italy for a choir festival and we got to sing at the Vatican. I also used to lead worship at my old church. That being said, I'm really not that great of a singer, which is why I prefer singing in choirs. I haven't sang in church or for school in awhile though and it's something I'd like to get back into.
20) I'm a born-again Christian. I grew up in a Christian home, but I didn't really become a Christian until I was in high school. In fact, I think I hated religion all that more when I went through my rebellious phases because I was made to go. I promise you, I'm not a crazy zealot but my faith is something that's very important, if not the most important part of my life.
21) I am really good at making excuses and rationalizing things, which I guess is why my parents think I should be a lawyer.
22) I sort of have personal space issues. I don't really like being hugged or touched or what have you at all.
23) I'm only 5-feet tall but I have no idea how much I weigh. For the sake of my sanity, I purposely don't own a scale or weigh myself regularly.
24) I'm thinking my lack of height can be partially attributed to my addiction to coffee. I started drinking coffee when I was 12 and I've prettttyy much been addicted since then.
25) Autumn is probably my very favourite season. I like weather where I can wear a jacket and I really love it when it rains or snows. I think the sun is horribly overrated. I mean, I know we need it to live and all...you know what I mean.

21) I am really good at making excuses and rationalizing things, which I guess is why my parents think I should be a lawyer.
That's probably why everyone tells me I should be a lawyer.
"I am really good at making excuses and rationalizing things, which I guess is why my parents think I should be a lawyer."
Thats probably why everyone tells me I'm a jerk.
Being multilingual is awesome. I will be starting my sixth language in the fall. (Mandarin, in fact)
I respect anyone who is good at writing.
These 100 things lists are very interesting to me. My friendly neighborhood bloggers are pretty cool people it would seem.
Mandarin and other forms of Chinese seem to me like they'd be the hardest languages to learn for someone used to English. My friend tried to teach me like two words of Mandarin once and I could not get the pitch accent at all.
I wish I played the piano!
I totally agree about the sun. Yes, it's great that it sustains life, but does it have to be so bright all the time? In that way, Vancouver is kinda nice. No sun.
PPP, to be fair...my dad's a lawyer and is therefore around lawyers all the time and apparently that's what they do all day :P
Jared, jerk...lawyer...same thing? (Sorry dad!)
Kirsten, I am so jealous that you know SIX languages! With my current Mandarin level, I'd say I only know one and half :P I really wish I would have kept up my French though.
I really like reading them as well! It's not hockey related but I still like to get to know the neighbourhood a bit better.
Meaghan, it actually is quite hard for people who aren't used to the pitches and intonation and everything. I'm a native Chinese speaker and I STILL Find it hard.
I hated playing piano when my mom made me do it, but she's right...I really do appreciate knowing how to play.
I like the sun in small doses...but I can't stand the heat and I'm actually really sensitive to brightness. Bah.

The blog is about Allsvenskan, the Swedish Elitserien, KHL (New Russian hockeyligan), NHL
and other hockey
Why?
For that it is there for all languages and that all can
understand it. Visit and see!
With my current Mandarin level, I'd say I only know one and half :P
I might still try and beg you for help if I have struggles. Your Mandarin is infinitely better than mine.
I'm pretty sure I would have a hard time coming up with 100 things about myself, but I might give it a try.
