How Much Would You Pay for Alfie?

Photo: Jean Levac, The Ottawa Citizen

Darren Dreger wants to know how much Daniel Alfredsson is worth. He poses the question that if Alfie were to hit the free agent market next season, how much would teams be willing to pay for him? Using Mats Sundin as a comparison, because they are both Swedish and in their thirties, he says that he ought to be worth $7-$10 million. Those were the offers being splashed around for Sundin, and he also notes that Alfie has not only out-pointed Sundin in 5 of the last 6 years, but they also have similar contributions in terms of their importance to a locker room and their place in the community. Not to mention the fact that Alfie is also a couple of years younger.

Alfie is currently on a contract that he signed prior to the lockout. His cap number is a little bit over $4 million per year but is set to expire next year with three option years that will take him to the end of 2012.
However, if the 35-year-old plays in at least 70 games this season as he has in his last six and averages a point per game or more which he has in five of those six, he controls the option.

Alfredsson could opt for unrestricted free agency in July, 2009. Of course, If he falls short, the option flips back to the Senators.

Alfredsson's agent, JP Barry intends to meet with Senators general manager Bryan Murray and Sens owner Eugene Melnyk in Sweden and although the framework, reportedly for a 4 to 5-year extension has been discussed, this negotiation is expected to take some time.

I'm sure the Senators will do anything to try and keep him and I say that he's easily worth the $7-$10 million but while the future salary cap figures are still unknown and with players that constantly need to be resigned, it's hard to put a definitive price tag on Alfie. Also because to me, he's priceless but that's another matter. Alfie has never been somebody who has been about the money though, and I'm more than confident that we'll see him retiring as a Sen.

I guess it depends on whether we're talking about a "fair" contract or a "likely" contract.

Taking AO's $9.5M as a standard for best-of-the-best, and the roughly $7M made by Iginla, Thornton, Lecavalier, Datsyuk, and Heatley as the standard for franchise players... a fair number for Alfie would be somewhere in the range of $6.8M to $7.5M.

But in the new, fiscally-responsible NHL you have to overpay by at least a million for every free agent. So peg him at $8.5M, soon to be eclipsed by 20 other guys who could potentially score 40 goals in a given season.

You know why I love Alfredsson? Because when the team was in financial trouble, he restructured his fucking contract. I expect him to stay with the Sens for another 5 years if they give him a reasonable offer. I don't think any player in the NHL today has the type of commitment to his team that Alfie does.

I say give him whatever he wants. Alfie for mayor!
