When Deep Does Not Equal Depth

SportsCentre has been doing their "6 Cities in 6 Days" series, profiling each Canadian NHL team in anticipation of the new season. Here is the bit they did on Ottawa where Darren Dreger says that this could be the year that the young prospects on the team step-up.
I'll go one further and say that unless Bryan Murray pulls some sort of magic trick the next couple of days to get us some secondary scoring, it is absolutely imperative the young guys step up when one looks at our current "depth" chart.
Dreger has said that this year's forward crop is as deep as ever, but deep does not necessarily equal depth. Once you're past Jason Spezza, Daniel Alfredsson and Dany Heatley, the scoring drops off considerably. While I have total faith in Antoine Vermette, Mike Fisher and Chris Kelly filling out their roles nicely and contributing positively to the team, the rest of the wingers are in my mind quite interchangeable, as there really isn't one that particularly stands out above the rest right now. Although reports coming out of training camp are that Jesse Winchester is looking very promising to fill out the line with Heatley and Spezza.
This is a very good year, perhaps better than before the young guys to step up and to have certain prospects stand out and make the jump to the big year. In years past, the rosters had been rather set, with a lot of returning players and leaving very little room for the young guys to make the leap. Competition is still rather stiff though, when one considers the needs of the team and the fact that there are still more prospects than there are spots to fill. The Senators do still have options in terms of trade or free agency with a little wiggle room left under the cap, but in the meantime, Dreger has said that Murray will wait to see what happens on the market and that leaves a little window of opportunity for the prospects to make a case for themselves.
Whatever happens, just make sure Cody Bass is one of the guys making the team. Please? There's a free t-shirt in it for you, Bryan and Craig!
Friday Five
1. Who was your first celebrity crush?
Red Ranger...possibly. Or some guy from some Chinese boy band. Heh.
2. What is the most embarrassing CD in your collection?
I am not embarrassed about any of my CDs! Fine, I have a 98 degrees CD somewhere.
3. Are you a good cook?
You bet I am! Or at least I would like to think I am. Probably not.
4. Have you ever dyed your hair?
Yes. Perhaps too many times. I think I'll have to refrain from doing so for the next little while though (I tell myself this all the time and it never happens).
5. Who is your favourite Disney Character?
Disney is misogynistic and evil! That being said, I don't know if I have a favourite character per say but 'Sleeping Beauty' has always been my favourite by them.
